Group: Sorry to start yet another thread on this subject, but I wanted to have the hotel information available on the first page of the thread for this event.
A third check of my hotel of choice turned up some issues that I just couldn't work around. Let's just say that you wouldn't be sleeping alone!
I've found a hotel that fits most of our needs very well. It's cheap, in the boonies (sort of), and there's plenty of dining options and amenities in the area.
The rate is $59.99+tax per night and you must book before 4-29-12 to receive this rate. Please mention Yamaha XS11 group when you book.

BEST WESTERN Cambridge
1945 Southgate Pkwy, Cambridge, Ohio 43725-3039

The next order of business is to come up with a name for this event. A few things to consider: We're in the Buckeye state. The location is along the Johnny Appleseed trail. The area is known for glassworks. There is a big-ass shovel that we will be visiting. There is a game reserve there called The Wilds. Let's see what you guys can come up with!
Mark

Hooray!
I'm just WILD about this, you can bet your sweet GLASS, Mr. Johnny Applespeed.

FYI Mark has put a lot of time and effort into getting this off the ground already, so it should be a great time. We had a couple of setbacks, requiring a lot more research and phone calls and all that planning stuff, so give him an electronic pat on the back!
I'll have preliminary maps of our routes in a few days, have to discuss several options with Mark.
Anyone know about anything interesting or worrying about the area of SE OH south of Cambridge, particularly any road closings, bridge washouts, cracks in the planet, really special roadside tourist traps / photo ops, etc, sing out!

Oh, and forget the Asylum - they wouldn't give us the group rate without certified sane family members co-signing the agreement... Sorry, I got nothing there.....

Wow Mark and Marty...Great effort...impressive...expectations are running high...gonna give the motel a call soon..Thanks for all your hard work.;) :D
"X S.E.ast oHIo" My play on words...
What are the specific dates this weekend is on?

madmax-im
11-12-2011, 04:52 AM
Ok I did find the dates posted in the other XSEast thread...they are ...
Fri May 25th Ride to Motel
Sat May 26th 1st dayride
Sun May 27th 2nd dayride
Mon May 28th Ride home
:D
Additionally I know a number of ST-Owners who live in Ohio. It might just be a gathering with ST-Owners and that site. Theres a wealth of local knowledge here and it can only enhance our experiences...The ST owners prolly wont compete for rooms at the motel as thery're local...

I looked at ST-O and the only thing i see is CampSTOC at Balsam NC...nothing in Ohio...so I'll post over there and see what the reaction will be...also dont think this would be anything but an informal get together. Actually CampSTOC is during the same time frame as XSEast...so looking at that thread it doesnt look like too many have signed up for it yet...maybe 10 ppl...thus far

Hey it's a form of dealing with the white stuff that's going to come.

Last bike ride was Nov 11 from a job site in Waterloo to Ottawa. The way there was warm reaching 20C. lots of bikes on the road.

Packed up my tools and clothing at 10:55 in cool but sunny weather, went back in to join the Remembrance Service for just a couple of minutes. At 11:15 exited into a snow storm. Snowed from Waterloo to almost Toronto many times with low visibility, cool but clear Toronto to Ottawa.

Bike not put away yet, hoping for a couple more days of usefulness. Will then be left with pinning for the spring.

I'm new to your forum, but would love to get in on a meet in the spring, without me re-reading a zillion post, could someone let me know the when and where and times of it all, any cost etc, Thanks, I definitely want to attend as long as I have my bike ready, And I live in northeast Ohio, heck, only about an hour and a half from Cambridge. Thanks! Rich. (and you can pm/email so as not to continuously fill up the new post with redundant post or point me to a thread already contains all the info)

I suggest you make it to the meet and greet on Friday evening. You don't want to set off with a bunch of strangers on Saturday morning do you:eek::)

Living on the river here in Cincinnati Ohio, I guess I take it for granted the amount of elevation change and curves in every road near me. I have driven those roads out there more than a few times, and yes, it is still part of the end of the glacier movement, lots of ups and downs and turns and twist.

Is it time to give the reminder? I'll take the PDF files in an email if you can.
In fact I take all your projected routes whether we ride them or not.
thanks

Somewhere I have a list of roads that were recommended to me as must rides in Ohio...I got it from and ST-Owner that lives in Parkersburg WVA and knows and has ridden all the roads in and around SE Ohio for the past 40 yrs...thats alot of knowledge...

As we usually do, we have 2 routes, one for Saturday and one for Sunday. We time the routes so that we can ride for a while, stop and visit for a while, eat and get gas in a timely manner so that the Specials and the special bus riders are happy.. :)

I took advice from several motorcycle forums and came up with the ones we have. We do cover the best roads there. Some as recently as last fall had some work done such as drains across the road so we have to avoid some of the well-known roads. But I think we have a nice selection. Should be fun!!!

Can anyone that hosts a site make some room for some files? That way we can offer a link for everyone to download the routes instead of me emailing them to everyone.

Marty,

A method I have used in for planned ride routes is to go to Google Maps and layout the route. It lets you make a link to the route you set up and post it. If you look in the control panel area where you enter the locations you will see a "link" Icon (looks kind of like a chain link).

LIKE THIS (http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=10240+Colerain+Avenue,+Cincinnati,+OH+4 5251+(Walmart+Supercenter)&daddr=39.28468,-84.61468+to:39.30902,-84.64776+to:Metamora,+IN+to:Batesville,+IN+to:39.2 8036,-85.15014+to:39.28184,-85.01207+to:39.19344,-84.90648+to:Cleves,+OH+to:39.17759,-84.74735+to:39.193038,-84.737305+to:39.1980734,-84.6869431+to:39.234043,-84.6836583+to:39.2557409,-84.6338787+to:10240+Colerain+Avenue,+Cincinnati,+O H+45251+(Walmart+Supercenter)&hl=en&sll=39.23345,-84.658241&sspn=0.059568,0.153637&geocode=FRwPVwIdQhH1-ilzRf4QC0pAiDGnLuz-mJP_CQ%3BFchvVwId6OH0-ilvGC56BjZAiDHB1zag_9f63w%3BFdzOVwIdsGD0-ikVxWPOWDZAiDFq4Isyzia8vw%3BFT3rWQIdp_ns-imPcrEFwpBqiDFGlIJIbwhPlw%3BFdOrVwId2Jzr-inju0EHj4tqiDEcN1wpVEypNw%3BFeheVwIdRLbs-imLtT0JH4lqiDFIDXn03C_zEA%3BFbBkVwIdmtHu-ikbli6uSIFqiDGzzuxkXjCtSQ%3BFWALVgIdEG7w-imrvNedJNVBiDEb5MFt6Ng2wQ%3BFXyPVQIdxdTy-iklysz5zTJAiDHG5Wsj_M4tiQ%3BFXbNVQIdqtvy-ik9NSPEE81BiDEOhYLvs-BzOQ%3BFc4JVgId5wLz-indCuF_KM1BiDF5Yw8wabhwVw%3BFXkdVgIdocfz-ildmI6_qsxBiDFRHoel0fRhOw%3BFfupVgIddtTz-imrSUZthDRAiDG0VTxBKcIT5A%3BFbz-VgId6pb0-il1P9sRuTVAiDFNVjLY9F1Iew%3BFRwPVwIdQhH1-ilzRf4QC0pAiDGnLuz-mJP_CQ&mra=dpe&mrsp=13&sz=13&via=1,2,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,13&t=m&z=13)

Thanks for that tip, Don. I use Streets and Trips to lay out the route, put in timed stops, locate and time gas stops and photo ops, keep the mileage between gas stops good for them "special" folks, manipulate the routes to where I want them to go, and so on. I learned to use S&T fairly well, and I can translate those routes into Garmin routes. Not sure if my head would explode learning Google Maps - the sponge is full... ;) But I'll give it a looksee.

If someone had a place to store these files easily that would be great, but, lacking that you guys can send me an email and request which files you would like and I'll send them back to you as attachments, not a problem.

File types:
PDF file (with some detail)
Streets and Trips 2010 file
Garmin file.

I understand the full sponge concept Marty. Nver seen S&T before, sounds like a cool tool. Being a Magellan owner, the Garmin stuff is probably not useful to me.

Thankfully we are only getting mildly cool temps. Had to turn the heat back on in the house, but none of that nasty white stuff flying around. Not even sure we will get a frost. In a way I am relived we are getting cold temps. I figured with the mild winter we were either going to get a late spring freeze, or a blazing hot humid summer starting in late April. Just hoping it is not both!!

Ladies and Gents:

I have put together a quick-and-dirty Web page for this rally:

http://www.appleattic.net/XS_east/

Among other information, there is a link to a folder that has the trip .pdf files and other navigation files supplied by MartyA. These files can be downloaded for your use in various navigation systems or, in the case of the .pdf files, printed out to give you a paper copy of the proposed routes.

(Please leave the other files in that folder alone.)

Any ideas for improvement, type corrections, or other comments would be welcome. Send them to me at jerryfields@mac.com

Jeff, I'd like to get together and meet sometime.
I work 4 twelves underground, off on Fri thru Sun, back to work on Monday evening shift in Greenbrier Co.
My first Rally with these guys was in in '04. Great bunch of guys and some A-1 [to say the least] riders. 'Just can't say enough good things about this group of experienced riders, both male and female riders.
I started out on an '80 XS1100-G with this group, and, like many others, moved on to other bikes.
You can give me a PM for a meeting time/place, or contact me at xsivebiker@yahoo.com or my number is in the "book".
'Ever been to the Cold Spot off old 61? between Oak Hill and Mt. Hope?
Possible Meeting place.
My brother-in-law, Steve , will be riding to the Rally on his 'Wing also.
Marty -- --- I'm still trying to get Keith, on his 'Wing, to attend.----
My son came in from N.C. tonight, My daughter should be in from Va. [law school] on Friday, sooo--- maybe Sunday, weather permitting for a meeting at the earliest before the Rally?
If not then, there's always other week-ends before the Rally.
As mentioned, give me a PM on this web site, or my email or a call on the hard wire and before Rally time we can discusss times and routes.

The rallys are a BLAST; it's always GREAT to put faces to the names you've been conversing with!
The year before last , I rode to Pa. to do a 186 mile group ride and had to ride back home the same day, 525 miles total---- I'd do it again in a heart beat!

Hey rman! Not sure of your route intentions, and I think my route is a bit out of your way, but if you want to meet up, there is a small group leaving my home Friday AM, I would guestimate that we should be at the Country Fair at the intersection of 322 and 66 around 10-11 AM. To locate this, take exit 60 on I-80, go north on Rt 66 (there is no south right there) about 5 miles to the first traffic light. Country Fair is right there. This is the best place to meet for us, after that the route is a crap shoot, so to speak.

PM me with your intentions, if you want to meet up with us. If this is too far out of your way that's fine also. You have a pretty good haul to get to Cambridge anyway.

We leave my house by 9-9:30 we'll be good. This gives the NYS contingent time to get here.

I better bring Eggs :) for you to cook up a nice breakfast:D I might even be awake enough to eat it.

I know it's too early to post weather reports, and I don't want to jinx anything, but dayumm it's looking good! Only a week to go. I've got my bike sorted out and I think I'm good to go. I just put on a new rear tire, so I've got a week to scruff it up a bit. I've never been one to preach, but I just want to caution everyone that we will be riding on some very challenging roads, so please make sure that your bikes are ready.
This is gonna be great!!

That is a route I can take. I am leaving the Atlanta area Friday (tomarrow!!) early. I would like to avoid the toll sections of I-77 and take back roads near Beckley, WV. Let me know where/when you can meet.

What!?! Again?? Scenic, backroad, shortcut that may be longer, ride rain or shine, lost??
If you still want to try it with me again, let me know. You bring the fuel tanker bike. I will get more clear siphon hose.

Brent thats funny...I'm not sure ...I want to get there early and even though I-77 is toll thru WVA its still quicker than going back roads...but on the trip home Monday I will want to take the long way home...I originally had planned a 600+ mile ride to Cambridge using mostly backroads but decided that would be too much before the rally and possibly leave me too tired to ride the Sat ride.So the 466 mile route on I 77 will get me there by 1pm...I plan to leave here at 5 am tmrw a.m.

This is a little late...
Arrived Thursday night around 6:00 local time. 1,591 miles per my odometer. Friday met up with some of the early arrivals and rode to the AMA museum. Nice facility and a good way to kill a couple hours. Later went to Davis Land Company to learn / see longhorn cattle. More on these plus photos in a later post. Dinner at Ruby Tuesday followed by gathering, beer, and good conversation around picnic tables at the hotel.

Will be heading out for breakfast soon, then off for today's ride. Weather looks to be pretty good. More tonight depending on when we get back.

DGXSER
05-27-2012, 04:41 PM
Yep, six XS11s this year. But a bunch of great folks, wish I was back there this evening, but the beast wanted to limp home.

If you wonder how tough and relentless the twisty hilly roads were, well, how often do you see a bike spit out a mixture screw!!?? Went to pull the carbs to see what got into the No1 carb, and found it was a matter of what came out!:eek:

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq160/dgxser/XSEast%202012/No1MixtureScrewornot.jpg

So, after finding a spare screw, spring, and rubber washer in my bag-o-carbparts, I went to the hardware store and found some smallish washers to take to the dremel and make a washer for it. Runs on all four now, needs some tuning, and a synch I am sure, but it hits on all four again.:D Now I know what it is like to ride an XS750 for 300 and some miles.:p;)

I made it home in pretty good time! Left the hotel at 7:30edt and arrived home at 3:15cdt (4:15edt). That's less than 9 hours to run 515 miles with 5 gas stops and lunch. The whole weekend ran me a total of 1,427 miles. I can now say with great certainty that the Vetter Magic Seat Board definitely works! :)

Thanks to all in attendance, especially to the team that set up and coordinated the rides and the event as a whole. It would have been nice to see more XS's there, but then I would probably not have won the "Best XS11" award if there was any more competition. :D Overall, it was a great event and I truly enjoyed the trip.

Well...made it home safe and sound by 5 pm...Brent Greg,Steve and myself took an extra 2 hours to run 26 to Marietta...a really nice road that had some fast sweepers ...and they would come in groups ...road was never straight for long...the weather broke this a.m. and the humidity was very low...running thru the forest was cool and the scenery...the bucolic farmland of the Ohio countryside is amazing. I dont think I saw one farm that was on flat ground... and that is true of the entire rally.Great riding with you Brent,Greg and Steve.
Another memorable ride with Brent...in more ways than you can imagine. I ran similar mileage to Cataonic Bug's...1433 miles in four days and in 10 hrs today rode 526 miles.
Another great rally in the books...:D:cool: Thanks to Mark and always there as well Marty A...for all the planning and preparation...everything went well including the food stops for lunch...especially Quinets' Food Court in New Martinsville WVA...the array and quantity of food they have prepared is really unbelieveable..I know I'd like to go back there...LOL...AND...
well now i can say that my bike isnt the only one that has something fall off of it at an XSEast rally...Eh?;) Great to see all everyone and make some new friends too. So there was some scuttlebutt abt next yrs rally already but I'll not say anythng at this point I'll leave that to others...suffice to say that the area deserves to be ridden...again;)...Cant wait til next yr...and just maybe I'll have the XJ...we do need more vintage bikes or whats the point of an XSive rally if no one brings theirs?...that includes me too. Rode partway home with BNE. He topped off his BIG tank & I brought the siphon hose, but we did not get lost and I stopped for fuel with a gallon still left each time.

There are some good twisty roads all around that SE Ohio area. Those who miss XSeast miss some great XSives socializing, great back roads, georous scenery, rural setting, a really BIG shovel (in 2012), plentiful & delicious food. ... A world class riding tour at bargain prices. Hope you can make it next year, you might enjoy meeting XSive riders in person.

I rolled into the driveway around 4:30. For a 350 mile ride it sure seemed like a long one, probably due to the heat and traffic. As I sit here, writing this it now seems like a dream. Just last week I was brimming with anticipation, today, 1161 miles ago, itís in the past.

Some last day recollections. Cleaning up after Sunday evening, taking the garbage bag out to the dumpster and Deana talking to the two rabid raccoons working their way through the garbage, ďThis is our garbage, buzz offĒ.

Departure day is always rather sad. XSEast ends so quickly; I think we all wish we had another day. When we leave weíre so much more adept at road handling. Donít brake, counter steer.

BNE called the room at 6:15, Brent jumped out of bed and said Iíll be ready in 5 minutes. Iíve never seen Brent move so quickly to get ready. I helped bring down some of his gear down and shook hands with other riders preparing to leave. It was a cool morning but I could tell it was going to be a hot one. Standing on top of the EconoLodge hill I waved goodbye as groups of riders departed home on their respective journeys.

Ron, Fran, Rochelle, Ralph, Earl and I got on the road shortly after 9:00 following a Dennyís breakfast and a Sheetz top-off for the bikes. (Those Dennyís sausages were talking to me the rest of the morning.) Merging on to I-70 east bound, Ron maintained a reasonable pace avoiding attention of law enforcement. I saw 5 troopers ticketing folks over in that 40 mile stretch to the WV border. Of course they were too busy to assist the two broken down motorists.

Around 11:00 we got off I-70 onto PA-119 through Greensburg then on to US-30.

(When I coming to XSEast I got lost on PA-119 near Connersville. I passed a BAE Systems site where there was an enclosed parking lot full of desert tan Bradleys and woodlands camo Paladins being refurbished. Thatís something you donít see every day.)

Once away from lights and traffic we saw rural America celebrating Memorial Day. We ran a while on the flood plain of the Loyalhanna Creek to the left under a cool, tree shaded stretch that offered relief from the heat. We then passed by Fort Ligonier on the left, a reconstructed British fortification from the French and Indian War now tourist trap. Further on a number of Jennertown rescue vehicles were caravanning to a site for what appeared to be a parade just off US-30. We passed close by the Flight 93 Memorial; some of the sights were familiar from our 2010 gathering in Somerset. We ascended two peaks where temps were 10į cooler, the panorama fabulous; however, traffic precluded a hot run down the mountain sweepers.

At Breezewood, there were lengthy waits at the lights and gas pumps as holiday travelers were heading home en masse. I made my farewells and departed the group heading south on I-70. Speeds increased and decreased, it soon bogged down with volume. Some weaving, judicious use of throttle and the right slow lanes put me 15 min ahead of folks I started with. I stopped at South Mountain to check traffic home and review the map for options; I must get smart on the all the upper Potomac crossings in this area, it could save me a lot of time. I merged back on I-70 to find myself abreast a van I had passed much earlier. Traffic slowed to a crawl towards Frederick, but I was right there at an exit ramp so I jumped off on MD-17 with nary a soul in sight.

I rode through the bucolic, tranquil Maryland farmland with rolling sweepers. The previous days prepared me for the twisties but a pair of right angle turns had me jumping on the brakes. So thatís what those yellow signs with right angle arrows mean. I continued on passing a HD trike to picturesque Burkitsville then crossed the Potomac into Virginia at Point-of-Rocks. VA-15 was slow to Leesburg, and VA-7 was slow to Sterling, temperature soared, traffic crawled and jaws tightened. Then traffic thinned, the pace quickened and I was on the final stretch. A right on to Beulah, through Vienna, and I soon pulled into the driveway. And thatís it?
