The washer swap allows more of the gears dogs to protrude further into the slots.
Putting an angle on the dogs and slots causes them to pull into the slots for a more positive hook up.

Thank You Billy ! I have the Mechanics factory manual, I find the engine and middle gear oil amounts but not the final drive. If it's in there would you be willing to tell me what page in the XS...

Yamaha service manual omission

I looked through the Yamaha XS1100 factory service manual and can't find the amount of gear lube that goes into the final drive.
I suspect it's something like the middle drive, 4.4 oz. when filling...

if the spring was cut the spring would have fewer turns, less wire, would mean less force exerted by the spring.
