I doubt it. Air molecules are smaller than oil molecules, so if the oil can make it past the seals, then there's not much chance of retaining air pressure.

Unhappy Time to find a good home for my baby

It's a sad day, but our government owned, monopolistic auto insurance has finally beaten me down and I've decided to part with my XJ1100. I spent 2 1/2 years restoring this bike and while it's not a...

I call it a reed switch, but it's hard to see if there are any moving parts. Similar magnetically actuated switches are also used in the two buttons on the bottom of your gauge cluster.

NC stands for "normally closed".

When I re-built my XJ1100, I'm pretty sure it made a difference which way the floats went on the sensors. The floats have magnets in them which operate a reed...

What weight of oil are you running? I saw a similar problem with my XJ last fall when it got cool up here in Canada and I was still running 20-W50 oil. Until the oil was warmed up completely, I'd...

I was able to take my XJ1100 ignition switch into a locksmith and get the proper key cut. If I remember correctly, there was a sticker on the bottom of the switch with the code on it.

Sorry for implying that you made up the "Type 2" name. I should have remembered that from my copy of the shaft drive service manual.

Re-use your original crush sleeve

I re-built an XS850 final drive before installing it on my XJ. It is what you refer to as "Type 2" with the crush sleeve instead of shims on the pinion shaft. All I did was find a steel bar that...

Thanks Yahman.

I'm going to try removing the rubber "gasket" around the headlight opening and raising the windshield up 1/2 inch or so. Hopefully this will let a little air in at the bottom. ...

I just mounted a Plexifairing 3 on my XJ1100, using Yahman's idea for the handlebar mounts (thanks for that; much better than forking out the extra $ for the square bar hardware bags). I currently...

Thanks ridinghard.

That's pretty much what I had in mind. It looks like the XJ is pretty similar to your bike, so the concept should work for me.

Update on shock rebuild

For the record, I've now put more than 1300 km (about 800 miles) on my XJ1100 and so far (touch wood!) I do not have any oil leaks on my rear shocks and they are still holding air pressure. Lots of...

Tarzan:

The bike had just over 30,000 km when I picked it up (around 19,000 miles). Hard to believe that someone would just park it like that, but my good fortune!
