Jeff, I have heard of the very early late style carbs using brass floats but never the early type using plastic floats unless the PO changed them. I would go with all brass on the carbs you have...

The holes in the side of the emulsion tubes are air bleed holes, the less holes, the richer the mixture. Richer mixture runs a bit cooler in temperature so they were placed in the 2 inboard carbs....

You need to find someone with a set of gauges (or purchase your own) to properly sync your carbs. The 1.5 turn out setting you read is a rough starting point for the 4 idle fuel mixture screws.

Yep I got it, thank you. Turns out I have to take apart the speedometer to fix the detached bulb reflector rattling around inside. Otherwise it seems to operate properly.

Yes, the screen for the fuel seat goes on that lip, good luck finding any. AFAIK, they are NLA.

If you want, you can ditch the relay altogether and jump the red/yel and the blu/blk in the harness plug. The headlight should go on with the key in the 'on' position.

Yep, I told him before if he keeps having to push this bike, he might want to try to find a lighter one. The XJ11 is a bit top heavy for this application. :)

On the XJ at 6K with no load, I read almost 70 deg. advance with my adjustable timing light. It's a HF unit so it may not be 100% accurate. No detonation AFAIK.
