Even 7 V would give a LARGE current if the resistance is close to 0 ohm...?

Or is a resistance within the gauge (needle) limiting it?

....don't like to find out what happens if the flashover...

I would try the float height in the chambers. Effects the whole trottle range. Had the same symptons on mine, adjusted more than 2 mm higher, with carburator upside down. Made all the difference, now...
