Thanks Dan

Its a 1980 with a 79 Carmine red tank, I painted side covers myself including the side cover emblems. The pipe is a Jardine, it was worth every minute of the 2 years it took to complete(maybe not to the ex!). It has a 79 motor as well, pulls nice and strong.

Looks good and solid as a rock. I like the fit of the Kerkers and the upswept design of the muffler, looks very good on a Special. The trick handlebars look good too. You can find nice side covers on e-bay from time to time as I got a spare set last winter but they cost me an arm and a leg but I figured I better get them as nice ones are hard to find. I noticed a strap or at least what looked like one on the right rear shock, what is that for? I've put a set of V-Max bars on mine and the bars are Max but my cables and so forth are two long and look kinda funky and so I need to cure that or go back to the Standard bars I was using.

You have a killer Eleven.......but I just gotta know, do the girls in your neighborhood really call you Mr. Schweer?

If they do, you are da man!

So very true and it seems the maintenance fee's are increasing faster than the national debt.

That dopey strap is a temporary mount for the muffler.

4-1 Mufflers

When I edited the picture and enlarged it I caught that. I have a spare set of Kerker 4-1 pipes wherein the mounting tab on the muffler is similiar to the mounting tab on my Super/Trapps. The tab is in the same place as the tab on the stock muffler. I used the Super/Trapps rather than Kerkers because the collectors on the S/T's are larger in diameter (64 mm) and the head pipes are double walled, (38 mm diameter) and don't turn blue. I have two different megaphones/mufflers for the S/T's, one containing a mechanical silencer that accomodates up to 32 tuning plates and another megaphone/muffler that uses a fiber wrapped 2.5 inch straight through pipe with tuning plates which is a little quiter than the 2.5 inch core with no plates with little difference in horsepower. I also have one of these custom cores that S/T made for me that fits the megaphone of my Kerker piece. I have a Lockhart oil cooler and both the S/T's & Kerkers barely clear the oil filter housing because of the oil cooler adapter's additional length but they clear sufficiently to remove the filter housing without dropping the pipes but oil changes are still a mess at best. The center stand also fits nicely with the S/T's and the muffler even has a rubber bumper like the stock pipes. A picture is attached.

Very sweet Special, Dan.

I believe that's the first time I've had the honor of seeing one of yours...

One of these days you & I should get better acquainted.

(I hang out w/ Cody a lot...) It's his fault I got back into bikes in the first place... he just kept comin' over w/ 'Zilla all the time...'til he got me hooked by ridin' his '79 Standard one day to Guthrie... that's another sweet bike.
I was just like Will Smith when I got back.... "OHHH I HAVE GOT TO GET ME ONE Uh DEES...." to which Cody said... "Not a problem... come with me."

That's the day I saw my XJ...

Now it pretty much rules my thoughts of the day.... how to get something fixed , find a part to fix it, will it be ready by the next ride, or when IS the next ride??? Friends... don't know what I'd do w/o 'em.

Thanks for sharing the picture of your ride.

Thanks for your comments and I would like to think my Special is special and it should be, I've been tweaking it since 1981.

Cody is another perfectionist who won't settle for anything less than perfect and he had the nicest "Winged" out XJ-Eleven I ever saw. He also had a killer red 79 Special with a Bubba seat that was so nice that I actually gave him a brand new (NOS) 79 Special seat to finish it out and what did he do, he sold the bike and I was devastated and I think he has regreted it ever since.

The XJ like you have is in many ways the best looking of the Elevens but it's a little heavier and makes less oats than the earlier ones in stock trim.

My favorite Eleven was the 80 1100-G but with a set of the short pipes from a Special but pristine ones are hard to find.

Actually I never met an Eleven I didn't like and with some finesse they can be a sweet piece.

Good luck with your XJ project.

Dan
