Idling problem
What causes a surging idle.
It gets worse after a 10 mile ride. Bike will come to a nice idle the after a few seconds will dip down if I do not hit the trottle it will stall. I have to hold the trottle at about 15k or it will dip down and stall. cold start up it does not seem to do this. I recently cleaned out my pilot circut and put in 45 pilot jets. I color tuned it for the first time so I may not have done the best job. Tia Rick

Sounds like you need to re-sync your carbs

I think a lean idle will hang high, so you may have color tuned your carbs lean, and once they're done hanging high, and drop down to where the idle's set, the idle is too low. Have you taken a look at your spark plugs?
Plus, you may need to re-synch your carbs. Good luck!

Yes I think I'll sync them again.
probably re check the color tune. There was an improvement just not what I'm looking for yet. I was tring to get an idea on what causes the surging techniquely speaking. Rick

Not now...I've got a headache.
Hi Rickrod3,
I'd suggest taking the bike for that ten mile ride first. Then sync while the bike is at operating temperature and actually presenting the problem you're speaking of. Stone cold. Warmed up enough to "run" without the enrichment engaged. Road hot-n-ready for more. Just saying that a little "foreplay" might produce a better sync setting.

Vacuum Leak?
Think you should check for vac. leaks first?

syncing seems to have helped the idle surges less
As I understand the main jet should be set first.
I'm getting a stumble at 6K which is better as it gets hot. Is 6K on these bike main jet area? Reason why I asked is that even with the 45 pilot I'm noticing I'm having to turn the mixture screw over 4 turns out to get a orange flame. On these 34's the main jet feed the pilot. I'm running 140 mains. would go to 142.5 pipes are an open slash cut type no baffle. What do you think? Rick

Sound and Fury Versus SBD....
Rickrod3,
Apparently with those open mufflers there needs to be some changes in the carbs in order to accommodate the reduced back pressure. (See thread of Planedick's stumbling problem...) Mains first is right. Then if you get any other "weirdness" that you can't get rid of through adjusting the idle air mixture screws then it's on to the idle jets or other areas. In the end it's a "recovery" process where because of the low restriction/after-market exhaust you have to do all that you need to do to get things right. Otherwise the "Kung-Fu" of the engine is NOT strong. Superbike with weak kung-fu? Say it ain't so!!! I chose to use the JCW slip-ons as a replacement so for me at least I didn't have to fuss with any jetting alterations. May not sound as scary but... Her kung-fu is strong. HTH

Loud pipes save lives
They are not as loud as I thought they would be.
When I first got the bike I thought I would have to replace them. Well I did the warm up ride and then synced color tuned and syned. The test ride was pretty good. The headers are starting to show less blue and a touch of yellow. Poping also seems alot less. Last week it poped so hard the the vacuum pipe came off the petcock. Thats not happening any more. Yesterday the bike ran so poorly I did a compression test. I was good all clyinders between 152 and 146. I would guess outside temperature effects a bike thats already lean in a negative way. The bike was stumbling but lately it became unrideable. Temps here have been in the 90's. The bike seems acceptable enough where I can try to dial in the mains and work back. I'll try a few roll ons and see if I can narrow down the beasts current nature. Let you know Rick

Orange with the colortune?? That is no bueno.
On 'Sunshine, i have the el cheapo Emgo pods....no problems with them. IIRC the problem that some have had with them would be them running rich due to the air flow being cut off by the 'lip' of the pods. Some have used the stock airbox 'tubes' with the pods attached to them to alleviate this issue.I prefer not to ride in the rain myself, but if its raining hard enuf to mess with the pods, then i'd be more concerned with slipping around and visibility issues.....
