Replacing the XJ1100 air box partition seal

Replacing the missing NLA 5H0-14462-00-00 SEAL with the aftermarket HCP22413 from xj4ever.com.

Chacal calls it a 'puck' and it fits into the air box partition at roughly 10 or 11 o'clock as you look into the air filter housing. If the foam seal is missing then unfiltered air will be pulled from the snorkel, under and around the air filter and then into the upper chamber of the air box next to the #1 carburetor boot.

Ready?

Great Scott! That small foam seal in the air box partition is missing!

Put a microscopic drop of air filter oil on the seal and work it into the foam, then slowly push the new seal into the air box.

The upper end of the seal housing looks roughly the same as the lower end but without as much open space. The seal will stay in place and won't just go through into the upper half of the air box and get sucked into one of the carburetors.

Almost there....

There!

Check the seal when you check the air filter. You can use forceps or hemostats to work the seal out and clean it, then add fresh oil.

I've never seen that before... maybe I should go pull my air filter. Come to think of it, I've never changed my XJ air filter.... I've been meaning to do the K&N filter element hack.

I dug up the broken air box from a wrecked XJ1100 and took some pictures of the air box partition.

The partition is sandwiched between the upper and lower halves of the air box.

If it's not there or it's falling apart, get a new puck from Chacal, it's quick and simple to use.

While you're at it, grab another air filter from Yamaha. The price went down and for now they're only $28 which is simply insanely steep but not utterly ludicrous and you can use the new OEM filter while you figure out how to put the K&N fabric on the old filter. Put your new K&N fab'd filter in at the next filter change and fab a second K&N filter.

Oh, and make sure you check the foam seal on the top of the XJ11's air filter to see if it's still glued to the steel air filter frame. That seal is the part of the air filter that gets pressed against the air box partition when you push in the filter locking wedge (#26 | PLATE, ELEMENT FTNG | 10M-14468-00-00 NLA) and the air will go around all of that fancy new K&N filter fabric if that foam comes off.
