Okay, my bike was having a backfire and would not idle and someone told me to check the oil and when i did it was way too full. This gave the people in the thread the suspicion that there was gas in my crank case and today I drained the old oil and confirmed that suspicion. I also sprayed some carb cleaner in the carbs and put the new oil in. Now that that work is all done i fired up the bike and the backfire had been eliminated thus far. The machine still wont seem to idle though and after the initial start the bike idles while choked until i roll on the throttle. Once I do that, when I roll back off the throttle the bike dies as if the idle is just too slow. I tried letting the bike idle for several minutes while choked and whether i roll on the throttle or try to disengage the choke the bike dies either way. Any insights would be helpful.

Okay, shouldn't i just buy some kits and rebuild them though since i have gas leaking into the crank case?

Also, I shouldn't need to drain the gas or anything out right I can just take the carbs off and the bike should be fine to sit?

You could, but kits aren't always needed. The jets themselves don't usually go bad, they just get covered in crud. If you have the newer carbs with the o-ring around the float needle seats, you may need to replace the o-ring, but the rest should be cleanable with a couple cans of carb cleaner spray and a compressor for a shot of air to blow the gunk out. As for draining the fuel, as long as your petcocks aren't leaking, you should be able to detach the tank and remove it without draining. Just remember that the float bowls will be full, so you need to pour the fuel out somewhere safe (not in the flowerbed
![]() Make sure you change that oil before you run it again, to get the fuel out of the system. Bearings don't like fuel...

not unless the petcocks are dripping vital fluids. If they aren't, that was a inferior way of finding out.......but hey, worked for U.

Well I'm still wondering how the fuel got in there and when i removed the carbs when i disconnected the line from the right side petcock to the carb nothing came out but when i did the same for the left side some gas poured out perhaps that means that petcock is faulty?

The fuel that is in the lines will drain out, so a little is not bad as long as it stops.
If the bike is sitting outside go shove some rags or something in the intake boots so crap doesn't get in the engine when the carbs are off

Okay so I've been following the steps on the carb cleaning 101 thread and everything has been going well so far but now I've ran into my first problem. The pilot jet in #2 wont come out. It looks like the last person to be in these carbs stripped it and I'm having trouble getting the little guy out. So far though the jets all look squeaky clean and I've been enjoying the learning experience.
