I have 2 neighbors who are not cycle guys and they complimented the sound- they heard me going thru the gears a road away.
That was "Alphabet's Custom West" out of California. In my literature I only show a 4 into 1 from them for the XS1100. It sold new for $184.95 in 1980.

Yahman I have seen other alphabet systems and it looks like the quality was great- unlike MAC. Its too bad we can no longer get new Kerker, Vance & Hines and Alpahbet sytems. Im hoping to record a quality sound clip of this bike revving.

If you want a nice sound, you could trade your stock exhaust system on here with someone who wants it, then use their header pipes. Get a set of Screamin Eagle mufflers from a Sportster. I have a set on my bike. They sound throaty, and at high RPM they resemble a well tuned race car. I love them. They are loud, but a few levels under obnoxious.

That's a sweet looking GS, reminds me of the GS850 I had back in collage. Probably the most problem free bike I've ever had.

Ride safe,

Stock head pipes,120 mains, were 110s UNI pod filters with Dunstall replica muffs, ( re-packable ) cheap from Mikes XS. I showed the measurement from the heat shields on the 1100 because you want to leave as much of the inner pipes intact as possible. This will also breath better than single wall pipes. I think there may be enough room to cut 2" off the outer pipe on the stock head pipes to clamp the muffs to the inner pipes but I'm not sure so I'll need to drill a small hole in the outer to see. As is I found a bit of car pipe to jam into the inner pipe and then use the included ( with the muffs ) spacers. The other way cutting the outer pipe back to expose the inner and attaching the muffs to them is what I want. Don't think there is any power increase, maybe even a bit of loss.

Don,

That sounds like it might be just a bit lean.

Hi Jetmech !

I know but with the next bigger pilots it idles rough. I do have the idle mix screws out to 3.5 turns with the stock 42.5 and 120 mains. Though where I notice the popping is on decel. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE !!!!!

Maybe try the 45 pilots and turn the mix screws way back in ?

Do you have pods or airbox? If pods, I would expect airbox to cure it. I run the same pilots and 115 mains. Two turns out and no popping.

Just dosed my pods with K&N oil real good then it started raining, next few days.
At least it will help me find the dandy lions !

Hey Don,

Part of the jetting guide states if you have to turn the pilot screw out more than 3 turns, then you need to go up another size. You've got aftermarket mufflers, and almost everyone has reported decel popping with non-stock pipes. You can raise the overall idle speed a little bit which will keep the butterflies open a little more so it won't be so lean when you let off the throttle which will help reduce the popping.

I run pods and a 4-1 set, I know that it will pop on decel, I've grown to like it, it's just Godzilla growling saying he wants to run and not slow down!!

K&N oil??? I thought you used WD-40? (inside joke)

I don't think I would agree with the 3 turn out statement. I have a totally stock (other than K&N stock filter) setup and I had to start out around 3 turns out to get a good startup and idle when getting the initial tuning started. Maybe if you get up into the 5 turn out area then you should go up one more jet size but 3 turns is about in the middle of the idle mix screw range so why wouldn't you use the range more.

Hi Nate !

On my one out of 56 XS650s I found it to run best at 4.5 turns out. Bad thing was one of the mixture screws got lost on a ride. The 650 vibes more so maybe not a problem on the 11 ?

On both my sets of carbs it is a little over 5.5 turns before they get loose. With the springs on the screws I wouldn't be afraid to run them at 5 turns out.
