My speedo update

A few days ago i mentioned that my speedo and tach both bounced (My speedo at 30mph and under, and my tach at 3k rpm and under)

Well... i was riding the bike 2 nights ago, and the speedometer quit, how do i check to see what the problem is?

I would disconnect the cable at the speedometer end. Then , with the bike on the centerstand and the front wheel off the ground, turn the front wheel by hand.Does the square drive pin turn inside the cable? If so, the speedo is probably bad.
I not, then either the cable is broken or, something is wrong with the drive in the wheel.
To check the cable, just disconnect both ends, then turn the square pin in the end and see if the squre pin in the othe end of the cable is turning too.

Yup check the cable on the speedo. Probably broke from too much friction.

Hi Eric,
if the odometer still works the drive cable is OK and the speedo half of the instrument is dead.
If nothin' works, take the drive cable off the speedo head, block up the front wheel and spin it.
If the square end on the cable turns, the entire speedo is dead.
If the drive cable don't turn, it, or the worm-drive on the axle, is broken.
Thing 1) that needs to be fixed.
Thing 2) Most likely the drive broke through being overloaded.
Check the speedo head turns with just about zero resistance. We Canadians shove a Robertson screwdriver into the square hole and spin it to check this.
If the speedo resists turning, you might get lucky and penetrating oil will free it up.

so i took the speedo off and turned the wheel and the speedo end of the cable was turning but as soon as i grabbed it lightly, it wouldn't spin it...

how hard and expensive is it to replace the drive? cause the whole cable looks fine

Haarstad, if the speedometer and the cable are both good then what probably happened is the drive gears at the front wheel bound up from wear or lack of lubrication and the drive plate tabs bent or broke off. It's also remotely possible that the square hole in the drive gear for the speedometer cable is... no longer square.

If that's what's wrong, member andreashweiss can probably hook you up with another speedometer drive and the tabbed drive plate for the front wheel. Send him a PM.

Yup, either andreas or ebay. Pretty cheap and easy swap.
