Finding the parts you need

Whether or not they're Genuine Yamaha

      The Sources

There are a number of sources for parts to maintain and repair the XS/XJ 1100 motorcycle. These may be OEM Genuine Yamaha parts, used parts, parts from other makes and models, or aftermarket.

      Manuals
Initially, you need to know what you're looking for. Sounds obvious, but knowing the right name of a part makes a big difference when you go looking. Next best is being able to accurately describe its function. A good repair manual is indispensible for this purpose. There are three manuals and a CD ROM available for the XS11, one manual for the XJ11. The CD ROM covers XS and XJ 1100 models.

      • Yamaha Factory Service Manual - The factory manual is the most technical and assumes some prior mechanical knowledge. Every step in a procedure may not be described in minute detail. This may still be available through Yamaha for XS and XJ models.
      • Haynes Yamaha XS 1100 Fours Owners Workshop Manual - The Haynes manual is one of the favorites, but since it's out of print, may be difficult to come by. XSive Erik Thestrup may have some available. XS11 only
      • Clymer XS1100 manual - This is a good manual for most needs, though errors have been noted in the electrical diagrams. Also very popular. Currently available. XS11 only
      • The XS/XJ 1100 CD-ROM is available from XSive Rob Mills. It includes factory manuals and supplements for all XS/XJ 1100s as well as selected information from aftermarket sources. See the XS/XJ 1100 CD ROM page for details.

Used copies of all these manuals are available from time to time. Motorcycle Memories is a company that specializes in old motorcycle literature including books, magazines, and promotional items. Online auctions sites also may list repair manuals.

      Microfiche
Next to the factory manual, the best place to find detailed exploded drawings of XS/XJ 1100 sub-assemblies is a microfiche. They are available individually online and sometimes from your Yamaha dealer for about $5 to $15. They require a microfiche reader which can usually be found at a public or university library. You can run photocopies of the sections you need. That's the hard way.

The following is a list of several sources for online microfiches. You can view them free of charge, and the images can be downloaded to your computer and printed.

      • Dutch Yamaha XS 1100 Web Site
XS1100 Standard - Tech drawings and diagrams from the Haynes manual with text in Dutch. Click "Technical" on the left bar menu.
      • Sieg Kientoff - Online Microfiche for 1979 Yamaha XS Eleven Special
      • Chris Rawson - '78' XS1100 E parts microfiche
      • Maans Smit - Parts and Numbers List (Pre Microfiche) for XS 1100F (1979) South African, Australian, New Zealand and Reunion models (black engines with engine/frame numbers from 2H9-110101)
      • Ken Talbot - Online '81 H microfiche
      • Bike Bandit
They have a microfiche online for every bike made since the mid 70's. Also included are the technical sections with recalls and service info. From the drop-down menu, select "OEM parts". Then select make, model, and year.
      • Power Sports Pro Parts Fish
You have to register with them but they have good microfiche online. Go into Fish finder when you get there.
      • Rob Mills XS/XJ 1100 CD-ROM
In addition to manuals, this CD-ROM contains microfiche for several models, including the XJ1100.

      Catalogs
Motorcycle catalogs, in print and online, are one of the most important sources of information about what's available for your bike. All of the following are available free on request.

      • Chaparral Motorsports (CM) [Print/Online]
One catalog for street and dirt bikes. Has some good prices, especially tires and handlebars.
      • Competition Accessories (CA) [Online]
Good comprehensive online catalog for street and dirt. AFFILIATES PROGRAM.
      • Dennis Kirk Street Catalog (DK) [Print/Online]
The most comprehensive listings make this "must have" FREE catalog a great resource for finding parts and cross-referencing part numbers. They also have catalogs for Dirt, Harley, Snowmobile, ATV & Watercraft. They will beat by $1 any magazine advertized price on tires or helmets. For this pricing, just call them and tell them the name of the magazine and page number; and the name of the dealer and advertized price. They'll check the ad while you wait and beat the delivered price by $1.00.
      • JC Whitney Everything Motorcycle(JCW) [Print/Online]
The JC Whitney catalogs have been around as long as I can remember. They have a nice catalog with lots of aftermarket items. There are some good products and good deals there, but be sure to check their shipping and handling fees. Their charges are calculated according to the value of the order, not the size and weight. Small, high value items can get expensive quickly. They also have several other automotive specialty catalogs.
      • Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse (MAW) [Print/Online]
Comprehensive online "no frills" catalog. Good prices.

      XS/XJ Friendly Dealers
Even if you know exactly what you want, it can be difficult to find dealers who are knowledgeable or sympathetic when you want parts for your 20 year old bike. If your local dealer can't help you, here are some dealers that are "XS/XJ friendly". If you know of a dealer that should be included on this list, let us know and we'll include it at the next update.

      • Cycle-Re-Cycle II
        Web Site: http://www.newmotorcycleparts.com
        E-mail: cycle@inct.net or parts@inct.net
        2233 E. 10th Street
        Indianapolis, IN 46201
        (317) 634-7550
A small company dealing in new and used parts, including specialty items. Good selection and prices on many carb jets. Owner Rob Eberle is extremely knowlegeable on most bikes going back many years, and responds personally to e-mail inquiries.
      • Merriam Cycle
        Web Site: http://www.MerriamCycle.com/
Merriam Cycle is dedicated to vintage Japanese street motorcycles from the late 70's to mid 80's, with an emphasis on the XS Eleven and classic Japanese motorcycle restoration. They're very knowlegeble, but usually pricey. If they don't have what you need they can probably get it.
      • Zanotti Motors
        Web Site: http://www.zanottimotor.com
        Email: zanmot@aol.com
        Butler, Pa. 16001
        Phone: (724)283-2777
        Fax: (724)283-0383
Zanotti's is a Harley/Honda/Yamaha factory dealership. They offer deep discounts on Internet sales of factory parts. Discounted parts can be ordered at their web site, by e-mail or by telephone. On phone orders you can still get the Internet discount as long as you tell them it's an Internet order. An additional small discount is given if you supply the factory part number from a parts listing or microfiche (See microfiche sources above). Some XSives have said that it is also helpful to mention the XS/XJ 1100 Owners Association (XSOA). They will also special order some non-Yamaha parts, including tires, at discount. Check with them for details. For phone orders ask for John in Internet Sales.

      Classified Ads
Online classified ads, whether general or motorcycle-specific, offer a tremendous resource for parts if you know how to search for them...and you're patient. Here are some of the better known ones.

      • Classifieds2000 (Excite)
      • Cycle Trader Online
      • Dragbike Magazine
      • Motorcycle Online
      • Motorcycle Shopper
      • Recycler Classifieds
      • Yahoo Classifieds

      Online Auctions
Online auctions provide another interesting resource. But you have to understand in advance the nature of auctions and know the value of your purchases. Otherwise you may get frustrated with the process or pay too much.

      • eBay is the best known of the online auctions. Listings for everything imaginable, including XS/XJ 1100 stuff.
      • Yahoo Auctions. Also good, though XSives haven't mentioned it often as a good source. Always worth a look.
